Hello,

I am trying to connect to the Internet using a Netgear DG834 and BT
Business broadband.

Story so far goes .....

1. My son in law can attach his laptop to the router and he gets onto
the Net.

2. I have installed a Netgear FA311 NIC on their desktop PC.

3. I can connect to the router from this PC and see the router config
but cannot connect to the Net either using IE or pinging any websites.

Any ideas what I should be doing?

Do I have to set up another Connection? In fact tried this and still
couldn't connect to the Net..

Cheers

Geoff

typing 'ipconfig /all' at an OS prompt to see what the DNS settings
and default gateway are on the offending machine.

On the initial page of the router config, you should see entries such as:

MAC Address 00:0F:B5:<censored>
IP Address 84.<censored>
Network Type PPPoA
IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.255
Gateway IP Address 195.<censored>
Domain Name Server 212.159.13.49
212.159.13.50

Modem
ADSL Firmware Version A2pB018b.d15h
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 2272 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 288 kbps
VPI 0
VCI 38

I've blanked out the information that is specific to me, but you can see the
essentials: that the modem is showing a real up/downstream speed and that
the router is getting a real IP address as opposed to 0.0.0.0 or 169.x.x.x.

If you're not getting these, the router is not connecting. Have a look in
the log entries (Security | Logs menu on router config pages) and see what
it's saying. There should be entries such as "LCP is coming up" and "CHAP
authenication success". If it says "LCP is coming up" followed by "LCP is
down", that's a problem with the ADSL carrier signal and may be a BT
exchange or line problem. If it says "LCP authentication failed", that
points to the username/password being wrong on "Setup | Basic Settings" page
of the router config.

Ah! Just seen that your son in law can connect to the net via the router.
Ignore what I said previously in that case!

Open up a DOS window (Start | Run | cmd or Start | Run | command depending
on version of Windows) and run "ipconfig /all" at the "C:>" prompt. Compare
the output of this for your S-i-L's laptop and for the desktop PC. You're
looking particularly at the DNS server entries. Both should probably be
192.168.0.1 - ie the PC uses the router as its DNS server and the router
uses its DNS server entries (on main screen of router config) to access the
outside world.

Try pinging the real DNS servers (on main screen of router config) from the
desktop PC.

Martin,

Not half as bad as my error!! The lead from the telephone socket to
the ADSL modem/router had been removed by one son-in-law. Once
connected all was well!!

Sorry about that - I do keep telling myself to check the obvious first
but ...

Thanks

Geoff
