Hi
My router is being delivered on Monday. I was reading the installation guide
(download). I have two machines one running xp the other win 98. I was going
to set the xp machine to connect to my isp. Once that was configured connect
the 98 machine.
The question is do I have to configure the internet connection on the 98
machine as well as the xp machine or can this be done through networking
alone.
Once these two machines both have internet connections, how do I network
them? Is it a case of running the network wizard on xp then on the 98
machine.
Please excuse my ignorance, as you can tell I'm very knew to this
Thank You
Big Dov (the big is nothing to do with my height)

Hi,
as your using a router, you won't need to setup your ISP details on
either machine. They go on the router, then both your PC's just see the
internet accross your local network. Configuring the router is covered in
this review
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware...gear-dg814.asp

Other than that, you just need to install network cards in both PC's, and
the drivers to go with them. Ensure TCP/IP is installed on both machines
(If they have accessed the internet before, it will be). Then in the TCP/IP
properties, set 'obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server
address automatically'. Then in IE, under 'Internet options->Connections',
tick 'never dial a connection'.

Thats it, the router will take care of everything else. In win98, you will
probably have to reboot the machine for the changes to take effect.

Setup is simple on the windows boxes, just set them both up for DHCP and the
router will do the rest.

Unfortunately its a DG814 so depending on your use and exchange equipment
you may find yourself offline more than online.

Download the 4.9RC firmware for the router to at least give you a fighting
chance.

Get the 4.9 RC3 firmware here.
It solves most of the DG814 issues.

Thanks to you all for responding to my post.
I think I have the internet thing down now. Once you input the settings
these are actually stored on the router itself, is that right?
Ok what about networking, file sharing, printers & the like.
How do I set that up? There is no info on the installation guide.

Thanks again

Depending on the OS you`re using, go to network neighbourhood /
properties (right click over the icon) on each machine and there`s a
place where you can enter a workgroup name - pick a name (I use EEYORE to
give you an example). Have a look around and there`ll be something about
obtaining an IP address automatically - it might be easier if you allow
it to do this for now.

Enable file and print sharing from the same place...

You may need to reboot a couple of times between altering settings...
