To amend that slightly, just plugging in an ADSL-capable phone line
doesn't make the light turn green, it turns green when it connects to
something on the other end of that line. This requires that (1) BT have
enabled the line, (2) some ISP is providing service on that line, and
(3) the correct user name and password have been entered into the
router.
Use the web interface to check the status -- it will give some
information about why it's not making a connection.
