DFS and "The network name cannot be found"

I'm new to DFS and my clients are receiving an error "The network name
cannot be found" when you try to open a folder that is a link in a DFS root.
The folder resides on a different server than the DFS root. The "Check
Status" command of MMC shows everything is OK. Also, when you try to open
the folder on either the server with the DFS root or the system hosting the
share itself, everything works as well.

Does anyone have an answer to this?

Sincerely,

Michael

As a follow-up, some users can open the folders but they see no contents
instead of getting an error message.

I had that error message when I was fooling around with DFS and tried to
create a link to a share on my XP Pro workstation. This did not work
because XP Pro does not include the DFS Service; so even though the DFS
MMC reported the share as active, and of course it worked as a share, it
would not participate in the DFS system.

So I would suggest verifying that (a) the link target share is on a
Windows Server and (b) that the DFS service is running on that server.
