I'm on a network with four computers connected through a
Belkin router/switch and a Microsoft switch. This
computer has two NICs from the time it hosted ICS. When
this computer is connected to the router via its SMC NIC,
everything is perfect and the other three computers show
up by name with computer icons. If I plug the ethernet
cable into the MN-130 Microsoft NIC, everything still
works, but the other computers become unknown devices
listed by IP addtess. Why should there be a difference
when everything works?

I've noticed a difference between the SMC NIC and the Microsoft MN-130 NIC.
When the computer is off and the cable is connected to the SMC card the
light on the router is off. When connected to the MN-130 the light is on
even though the computer is off. That's the same thing I see at the MN-150
switch where two computers are connected with crossover cables left from
before I got the switch and I connected 2 computers at a time. The manual
for the switch says it doesn't matter whether a cable is straight-through or
crossover and sure enough the network works perfectly. I'm convinced if I
connected the MN-130 to the router with a crossover cable it would work
perfectly, but I don't feel like rewiring to verify it.
