Determine Causes of Slowdown

Hi,

Most nights around 11.30 my server slows down drasticly. I have checked
the processes and nothing is using excessive resources.

I have had trouble finding resources that instruct a beginner in this
area on how to determine and eliminate the possible causes of the
slowdown.

Could someone point me to a resource or explain the basic steps and
software I need to use?

Thanks for your help,

Ben

Clarify your query, what slows down? I you're thinking "my server"
think again, what aspect of a process is slowing down?

Possibilities include name lookups (resolver, name server, whatever),
download speed (network congestion), mail, ftp, http, what?

Hi Grant,

Thank you for the quick reply. It is just HTTP connections.

ftp, mail and ssh are unaffected.

Sigh... Please read http://cfaj.freeshell.org/google/

Now check for name lookups or net bandwidth congestion, my ISP's
nameserver gets overloaded at times -- usually end of business
hours -- you need to identify what's happening where you are.

For example I had name lookup failures (web pages fail to load,
load on retry), installed dnsmasq, turned on debug and watched
the nameserver-caching in action...
