Hi All,

My n/w dept policies does'nt allow router on network b'cos that cuts
on their monthly funds. If I connect a router on this ethernet n/w and then
connect abt 4 pc's behind this router(Linksys BEFSR81) , is it very
EASY for the n/w dept to find it out?
This n/w is pretty big....about 3000-4000 computers.

TIA
Rachel

Depends on there setup. Initially no. They would have to notice that the
IP address of the linksys or depending on how its setup that it is a
linksys. With Mac address cloning on the linksys it can be hard to detect
without a packet sniffer. But they may notice if they use littlebrother or
some other network usage utility that the IP address assigned to the linksys
is now consuming more bandwidth. That would peak my interest in visiting
that office. But as with anything is it worth risking your job if you can't
get permission? Where I work if I discovered the unauthorized computer and
router, you would be instantly fired, and unauthorized computer seized until
they could be sanitized of any possible intellectual property belonging to
the business. By sanatized that usualy is a new hard drive, or Govt style
wipe of the hard drive. So that retrieval of information would be nearly
impossible except with high priced utilities.
