After enabling the redirection of my users Desktops and My Documents, Offline
Files sync turned itself on. I didn't want my users to have two sets of their
documents (no roamers), so I did everything I could to disable this... but
nothing worked. My users get a pop up on boot/login indicating that a
synchronization is being performed (even if I turn it off and configure the
share level options to not allow offline files). The part that is killing me
is that the network is unavailable until they perform the sync. Not only do I
not want to sync, but the network being down (no desktop/server access/My
Docs) for up to 30 minutes for some users is a nightmare. I've done my best
to get their My Docs under 2g... the main user in question has under 500mb.
The size doesn't seem to have much of an effect on the amount of time the
sync takes. How can I bypass this or get rid of it?
I have an OU with all of my office users inside. I've attached a GPO to that
OU that includes these options:
Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Network-Offline Files
Allow or Disallow use of the Offline Files feature
Disabled
Prevent use of Offline Files folder
Enabled
Prohibit user configuration of Offline Files - Prevents users from changing
any cache configuration settings.
Enabled
Remove 'Make Available Offline'
Enabled
Subfolders always available offline
Disabled
Synchronize all offline files before logging off
Disabled

User/Windows Settings/Administrative Templates/Network-Offline Files
Do not automatically make redirected folders available offline

Prohibit user configuration of Offline Files - Prevents users from changing
any cache configuration settings.

I've read that Offline Files are implicitly turned on when redirecting the
Desktop and My Documents folders. That is the problem, or at least the
sync'ing is the problem. I need to stop that activity as it is disconnecting
the desktop from the network somehow.
I've also tried this via logon script, fyi...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230738 - Method 2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\NetCache
Key Name: FormatDatabase
Key Type: DWORD
Key Value: 1
The desktop behavior is always such that the tray by the clock has the sync
warning flashing when the network connection dies. Changing the settings
(Turning off Offline Files) in that wizard never does anything. It usually
happens during logon/reboots, but it has happened in the middle of the day
without any warning.
I want to think that this hasn't been much of an issue for people who
haven't cancelled the sync at least once.
Any ideas? Anything else I can tell you?
I also tried this KB:
