Hi, all

We recently got a new win2k3 sbs server and restructured the local domain.
The old win2k server was taken out of the domain... as a stand along
machine...

I want to join the old win2k DC to join back to the new domain. I tried to
dcpromo the machine and failed... anyway i can downgrade the old server and
rejoin it back to the new domain without formating it. ..Many tks!
Jas

What errors are you getting when trying to promote the machine?
Any DNS errors?

Did you follow all the necessary steps prior to promotion in regard to:

1. Setting the Primary DNS Suffix to the domain you want to promote this
machine into?
2. Use only the DNS server the current domain is using?

If not sure, do me a favor and post this info:

1. ipconfig /all from the current SBS DC and from the machine you want to
promote.
To make it easier on you, in a cmd prompt, type in:
ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt
from both machines and then copy and paste that from
that text file in c: drive into your rsponse.
2. What is the AD DNS domain name in the current domain?
3. Any event log errors (the event id #s please).

Hi, Ace

I thought i probably didnt make this case clear. I just disconnected the old
Win2k DC from the network, which means all old AD setting still existed in
this server. I have got a new 2003 sbs server and rejoined all workstations
to this new domain. I am thinking whether i can join this old server to the
new domain? do i need to do DCPROMO first or can do straight away? Tks again
for ur reply!

Oh. You can't do that. COnsider using the ADMT tool to migrate the users
over. If the NetBIOS names are the same, then this won't work. Then consider
using LDIFDE or CSVDE to export into a file, alter the names, then import
them in the new domain.

You should have used DCPromo to demote it to a member server before you
yanked it out the first time. You will have to take the machine by itself,
*without* it plugged into the network and run DCPromo to remove its DC
status. You will need to tell it that it is the last DC in the Domain (do
*not* have it plugged into the network). It will become a stand alone server
when it is finished.

Then if you want to use this machine in the new domian, just join it to the
domain just like you would any machine. If you want it to be a DC
afterwards, then run DCPromo and make it a DC in an *existing* domain.
