deos not release and hangs

having trouble with my internet connection. Was working OK until about a week
ago then stared getting lost cable modem erorr. Now I have disconnected the
moden and am just setting up the NIC card. But also installed When I run
winipcfg I have a grayed out default gateway. I try to run relae all and the
system hangs and I have to end task and reboot. I have all the tcp/ip
settings good and the the NIC card reports that it is installed correctly.
