Anyone have experience running a Dell laptop and Windows XP with
TrueMobile 1300 (or 1400)? What vendor's wireless access points or
wireless routers work well with it and which ones don't?

I would like to run with full protection (LEAP, 128 bit WEP) turned
on.

Thanks.

I have the 1400 card on a new Inspiron 8600 running XP Professional. They
threw in a Dell TrueMobile 2300 router with it and it works at home okay but
not great range. I use it at work too with my Airport Extreme I administer
from a Powerbook G4. The thing is, if you turn off WEP, it works well. If
you turn it on to 40 or 128 bit encryption, the Dell won't pickup. It asks
for a network key. A Dell guy told me this is the password assigned to the
Airport Extreme base, but this doesn't work. The Dell tells you it (network
key) needs to be in hexadecimel. The Apple people tell me to call Dell. I
will say Apple's customer service is superior to Dell's and the hold times
are rarely over a few minutes, compared to small eternities at Dell. If
anyone has a solution, let me know. The thing about using it with the WEP
turned off is, that anyone with a wireless card can access my connection,
network, and that's a baaad thing.

I have had good experience with my Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop, Windows XP, with
a TrueMobile 1300 WLAN card working with a Linksys WRT54G router. My ISP is
AOL Broadband Cable. Before purchasing the Linksys router, I tried a Dell
TrueMobile 2300 router which I found out later was incompatible with AOL. I
have 128 bit encryption and WEP enabled.

My router is downstairs connected to my desktop PC, and I usually use my laptop
upstairs. My connection speed with the router is often 54 Mbps, though it
probably averages 34 Mpbs. I do sometimes have a problem with the connection
dropping for no apparent reason. The problem is more an annoyance than a show
stopper. If I wait a minute or two the connection comes back good again. I
upgraded the Linksys firmware to the latest but this hasn't fixed the problem.
I am going to try the higher gain Radio Shack antennas for the router to see if
that fixes the problem.

I had this problem with the 2300 router as well. What I did was change the
channel on it and the problem went away...for good. It seems some channels
are more prone to interference. The default channel out of the box was six
and I changed it to 11. The Dell tech told me to use one or 11 and that
seemed to do the trick.

What makes a router incompatible with AOL?

How often do you lose the connection?

This is a known problem with Truemobile 1300, I have it myself. You have to
disable XP's built-in wireless management and use Truemobile wireless
utility to connect to networks, that solves it. Google around for details
