Okay here goes...

Which system would you purchase if you were in the market to purchase a new
laptop. I'LL be using it for the internet, Office applications, some photo
editing and a very small amount of video editing.

The Dell 8600:
Pentium M 1.5GHz
15.4 Inch Wide Screen
512 MB DDR, 333MHz, 2 Dimms
40GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
24X Combo DVD/CD-RW
Dell TrueMobile 1300 WLAN 802.11b/g PCI Card
64MB NVIDIA GeForce FX (graphics card)
PRICE: $1,420.99

Gateway M350S:
Pentium 4 2.6 GHz with Hyper-Threading
15.1 Inch Screen
512 MB DDR, 333MHz, SDRM
40GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
24X /10X/24X CD-RW and 8X DVD-ROM combination drive
Integrated Wireless IEEE 802.11g mini PCI Card
Integrated Intel Graphic Chipset 64MB (graphics card)
PRICE: $1,100.00

What do you guys think is the better buy?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and/or comments !!!!!!!!!!

I would go gateway because I don't like, nay hate, Dell for home users.
But I would get a better Gateway if you are going for a decent laptop.

Do you feel the Gateway M350S is not a good laptop, why? What would you
consider a "better gateway"?

I'm looking for a good laptop for a reasonable price (hopefully less than
$1,500).

Nothing wrong with Dell, good reliable kit. But I think the wide screen is
stupid.
Personally I prefer the 8200 with UXGA 1600x1200 screen,
or you can get it on the 5150.
Regards
Martin

My problem would be with the video card. "Intergrated video card" means a
very crappy one that will hog resources and slow you down. If you can I
would get a different video card in it or pick a different model. Also
look at referbished units and check on eBay for slightly older models for
great prices. I got a Gateway 600 with 2Ghz, 512 MB of RAM, 30 GB Hard
drive, a ATI Radeon 9000 video card with 64 MB of video RAM, 15.7 in screen
and 802.11b WLAN for about $1,200.

eBay scares me for buying a laptop. I hear all kinds of scams about crooks
selling computer products on eBay. I do however buy many smaller items on
eBay, but not sure how to weed out the scams from the legit auctions in
terms of buying a larger (laptop) related product.

How did you confirm your auction was a legit one when you purchased the
laptop you described?

Thanks...
