Delays using GSM-Connection

Hello,

i'm trying to find a bottelneck in a download procedure using a
GSM-modem.

We're using FTP to get a number of small files. To get on file there are
a number of requests to the FTP server with their corresponding
responses.

For example there is:
Request : TYPE A
Response: 200 TYPE set to A

Using the GSM connection, there's a delay of about 0.9sec to the
Response with a packet length of 86 bytes.

Using a DSL-connection (and of course the same FTP-server), the delay is
only 0.1sec with a packet length of 1514 bytes.

Are there any parameters i can change to speed up the GSM connection?

If this is needed: We're running SuSE6.4 with a Siemens ME45 connecting
to freenet (D1, 22243).

Seems to me I heard there was high latency with GSM ..... haven't
bothered to check it out but it's noticably slower to respond than
my cable connection.

If it IS the network behind your GSM connection, not much
you'll be able to do about it - but running a test of packet
sizes would help you at least optimize where you can.

Oh, one other thing - my connection is rated 50k or thereabouts,
and using the HP fileservers to get about 10meg printer
drivers I saw averages around 44k, with peaks to 62kbits.
On the IBM servers for hard drive files, was averaging
around 52k, again peaks to 62k.

I'm using a Novatel Merlin G100 with Novatel's connection
manager; the one provided by the carrier sucks.

Long latencies seem to be characteristic of GSM connections: see the
section titled "PROBLEMS IN GPRS TO INTERNET CONNECTIONS" here:
