When my connection drops MSN Messenger troubleshoots as to why it cannot
resume on the internet.

It usually says there is a problem with the default gateway. Looking at
ipconfig in the command screen the default gateway has the same address as
the router.

Can anyone explain why this is happening? and what it means?

Regards.
Gavin

It's normal that the default gateway shows your routers address. When this
problem occurs does other Internet functionality also fail (e.g. web
browser) or only messenger?

Default Gateway = (equals) Router.

Did your connection ever work, reliably? If so, did you make any changes,
i.e., change from static to dynamic IP address, or vice versa?

Did you scan for viruses/spyware and every other type of scumware out there?
Did you try connecting another computer to the router, if so, did you get
the same response?

Did you try another NIC? What operating system are you running? Are you
using DSL or Cable Modem, or dial-up?

Not nearly enough info provided to work with...
