Default Gateway on DG834G?

Wonder if anyone can help me, I have a DG834G which is set up as 192.168.0.1
on my network, this presumably makes the default gateway 192.168.0.1. Is
there any way of making the default gateway something else, without changing
the IP address of the DG834G from 192.168.0.1?

Is the default gateway always the address of the modem/router? Can it be
changed? If so, how would I do this?

Thanks John

To be pedantic, it makes 192.168.0.1 the IP address of a gateway on your
network. The "default gateway" is a setting made on a machine.

Some routers allow multiple IP addresses to be configured on the LAN-side
interface; I don't know if this is true of the DG834G. You can use any
LAN-side IP address of the router as the gateway address.

You could also probably set up a static ARP entry that maps an IP address of
your choosing to the router's MAC address, and configure the default gateway
to be that IP address. You would need to do this on each machine. It would
be rather a strange thing to do. I've never tried it.

Ignoring the strange idea above, you can only use a LAN-side IP address of
the router as the gateway address.

> Can it be changed? If so, how would I do this?

Why do you want to?

the gateway is the address of the unit that gives the net connection in your
case 192.168.0.1 if you had the modem set to this and then a seperate router
connecting the pc's the gateway would be the routers address connecting it
to the modem.
The only way is to change the ip address of the unit, the new address will
be the gateway.
What is the problem with using this address?

My first question is why? Before trying to describe ways of doing this
if you let us know your objective there may be an easier way to
achieve it, or it may be a misunderstanding on your part which we
could clear up.

The reason I asked the question was an attempt to try and make the default
gateway on out LAN at work more difficult to guess, at the moment everyone
goes via a proxy address in order to connect to the internet etc, I
understand one or two have altered their settings and have added the default
gateway into their PC, and now have access to the net without being forced
via the proxy address. The two who have edited their settings told me they
just guessed what the default gatewasy was (it being so common) and I
thought that altering it to something less common would make it a little
more difficult from a guessing point of view. perhaps I was wrong.
Comments? Or any other ideas to make sure we keep everyone going via the
proxy address and not direct.....

John

Only allow specified MAC or IP addresses to access the internet from
the router. Look for "outbound rules" in the manual.

We don't want to block access to the internet, we just want to block direct
access. Whilst they are going via the proxy all traffic is logged. Once a
computer goes direct onto the net, the logging ability (via the proxy
address) has gone. All we are trying to do is keep a log of all activity
and make sure no-one gets around it. The modem/router in use is a DG834G.

I guess you are only talking about HTTP here. What about other Internet use,
such as sending and receiving email?

Whatever your requirements, the best solution will probably involve suitably
configuring the DG834G's firewall. If you can be more specific about what
people should and should not be able to do, then I or someone else will be
happy to help you work out how to make it so.

From what you've said so far, Rob Morley has given about the best answer. If
you only allow data from the proxy machine's (IP or MAC) address to pass
through the router to the Internet, then you will force all access to go via
the proxy.

So you block all machines except the proxy, then they have to connect
through that.

Take a look at this
http://www.yellowbugcomputers.com/te...ysettings.html
It appears you may be able to lock down your proxy settings providing
your users don't have admin privileges.I don't have XP Pro so can't test
it and gpedit.msc is not on XP Home.
