Debian network problem

Dear Group
I am reasonably inexperienced with Linux (& Debian) and have been asked to
fix a network problem.

A Debian server is connected to a network of 40 to 50 Windows PC's ('98
mostly with about 12 XP's).

A group of these PC's is in a Domain while the rest are in workgroups. All
of them use the server as a dhcp and proxy server as well as for some file
sharing.

Today the network is unreachable and neither is the internet.

All of the machines except the server can see each other when doing a search
by name. The server cannot be located by any machine. All (including the
server) can ping each other with no problem.

Can anyone tell me where to start looking to sort this out please?

Regards

Michael

The server is down. Focus your attentinon on that machine and its connection
to the others (physical connection, NIC , etc.).

Thanks Paul

As far as the server goes I am able to "ping" it from other machines on the
network so I believe the NIC is OK.

Could there be a corruption of samba or dhcpd or something?

As a service to the group here is the resolution to my problem.
It appears that the oassword file had become corrupted.
Merely resetting them was all that was required to bring everything on line
again.
Also, we have a router which, when the power was cycled off/on allowed the
internet to be accessed again.
Go figure.
