I get this error when trying to load a virtual interface

eth0 is ok and comes up at boot 192.168.0.102

I try to add eth0:1 192.168.0.103 and I get this error.

Debian 3, the onboard NIC did not work with debian, so I added a Netgear pci
which I assume is eth0

SIOCSIFADDR: No such device SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device SIOCSIFNETMASK: No
such device SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device

This error is normally associated with no or not supported NIC, but the eth0
works!

Thanks in advance
Mike

Which kernel? Some of the Debian 3.0 boot-floppies installers will set
up a 2.2 kernel. IIRC 2.2 kernels needed to have "IP aliasing" enabled
in the kernel to support the above syntax. It might be compiled as a
module in Debian, I don't recall.

It is an option when you compile the kernel. It has been quite a while,
years actually, sinced I used a 2.2 kernel in a situation where I'd need
IP aliasing. I think it could be built as a module, and if it is such
in Debain you should be able to load it with a command like:

modprobe ip_alias

You can make this permanent by adding the module to /etc/modules.

If that doesn't work, you may have to either recompile your kernel or
upgrade to a 2.4 kernel. 2.4.18 is in Debian 3.0 and can be installed
via apt-get.

BTW, the tradition in this group is to bottom-post, as I have done here.
