I have a new server to add to the network.
I did join the domain ...no problems so far.
When I use DCPROMO to make the new server a DC, will the AD automatically
replicate?
Will I need to do anything with DHCP and DNS on the new server?
My plan is to demote the old server ...eventually.

AM I on the right track?

Yes. That is precisely why you want more than one DC in a domain. The AD
information is replicated between them and if one DC goes down and has to be
rebuilt the other(s) hold the AD information for your domain. If you did not
have a second DC in the domain and your only DC had to be reinstalled, you
would have to start over from scratch, create your users by hand, remove the
computer from the old domain to a workgroup and then add them to the new
domain, dealing with the new profile that is created etc...

For DHCP see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325473/en-us

For DNS just set the existing zone to AD integrated, install DNS on the new
server and DNS info will replicate to it. Then use DHCP to hand out your AD
clients the new DNS server's IP address once the old is shut down.

hi will

For every of the domain controller the first dc will be the global catalog
and also the licensing server, after you have do the demotion you will see
the the old server will be the member, but the global catalog and licensing
you havent transfer yet and these will cause all the client cant locate the
domain controller. The second thing will be make sure your dns is active
directory integrated they will have alot of changes on the SRV record when
you do demotion

OK

So far I have AD replicating on the new server.
I have not done anything with the DNS or DHCP yet.
BTW I used the "Mange Server " interface to activate AD. Is that the same as
using DCPROMO?

I'm not sure what you mean "For DNS just set the existing zone to AD
integrated".

Question on DHCP/DNS
Old server IP is xxx xxx 0.3
This is in all references to DNS on member servers and devices such as
Access Points using static IP.
New server IP is xxx xxx 0.4

Once I have achieved the replication...what happens to all those static IP's
pointing to 0.3?

I plan on following your advice to have at least 2 DC's but I still must
get rid of the old server and then repeat the process for my next server so
that A goes away B becomes primary and C is the redundent one.
..

Either change all the static entries manually to reflect the new IP address
OR change the IP address of the new server to match the old. You would have
to go into the DNS zone and delete the records that had the .03 IP address
associated with the old computer name before changing the new servers IP
address to .03.
