Is there a prog which will run in the background and record every single
byte of data you use / upload / download etc ?

I use bwmeter which can also record other traffic on your LAN, and
from other PCs on your lan to the internet (provided you're connected
to them by a hub not a switch or router).

Also, if you have a router that supports snmp it may be able to use
PRTG. Not all routers support it unfortunately.

I was going to ask if the OP had a router, and was going to suggest PRTG
as well, nice program.
