Data Transfer Total

My computer club uses a DialUp modem to networl a number of computers
on club nights.

Generally our internet access is only general surfing and viewing of
pages, not too much file download.

We want to explore the option of a mobile phone GPRS access for stand
by purposes but haven't a clue how much data we access during a normal
club night.

Anyone know of any decent programs that will total up download and
upload data.

Why not just enable modem logging?

We actually use a Linux box as a server but, I know this sounds silly
for a computer club, not too many of us know how to read or alter the
set up pages. It uses IP cop and is only used once every two weeks,
not all of us can make all meetings so it is not a case of easily
being able to all learn how to use it.

Bit like the Honda advert, take it for granted as it works.

The original reason for this post was to count data to see if GPRS was
an option but as the words 'mobile and cheap' do not sit correctly
together in the same sentence that is not now an option.

It's probably in there somewhere already - I'd go look but I don't have
a Linux box up ATM. Try browsing the messages in /var/log/messages to
see if it's reporting modem sessions, if you can identify the relevant
string you can just grep it out.

Thanks for the pointers.

We've decided that after the mishap, a group of us are going to learn
how to use IP cop; after all, it is only an IP address when it is all
up and running.

I've used IP Tables and, I think it is called webmin on my Mandrake
set up but at the moment I am in the middle of an extension at home
and my Linux system is not accessible.

I've not tried it, but if it's anything like SmoothWall then it
shouldn't be too tricky.
