Hi all:

Up until about a week ago I had a LAN (2 computers, a print server)
connected via a router that was working OK. One computer was running
Windows ME (I'll call it "Computer A"), the other ("Computer B") was
running Windows 98SE. I had followed Carey Holzman's "Tips to fixing
Windows network problems" to get this set-up running and, as I said,
it was running OK.

Last week I upgraded the Windows 98SE machine to Windows ME and I
haven't had a well-running network since.

Initially, any attempt to browse the network on Computer B resulted
either in an "Entire Network (Not Responding)" error or, if it did
respond, it would take over a minute of hard thinking to load up the
next window. I thrashed around changing various settings on both
machines and got various responses on Computer B from the above
slow/no load of the entire network to the "Unable to browse network"
error. Machine A continued to act satisfactorily in all respects, and
I could surf the internet and read mail on Computer B.

Yesterday I sat down and worked through "TIP #1: How to Reset Your
Networking Configuration" on both machines, and.... It worked! The
only "issue" I could see was that Computer B did not show my print
server on the network, though it would print to it, with the printer
driver reporting a communications error. "Close enough", I figured.

However, today Computer B *wouldn't* display the entire network
("Unable to browse the network"), wouldn't print to the printer, but
continued to have the ability to get out on the internet and read
mail. And, oddly enough, if I clicked on the shared Computer A "C"
drive in Computer B's "My Network Places" I could browse Computer A's
C drive!

I went on to "Tip #3" and set Computer A to Browse Master Enabled and
Computer B to Browse Master Disabled. This seems to have brought me
back to where I was before: Computer B can get out to the internet OK,
it'll print to the network printer with the print driver reporting a
communications error, and it'll show the "Entire Network" – with the
print server missing – but takes a heck of a long time to do so.

As the print server requires NetBEUI I have that enabled, along with
IPX/SPX and TCP/IP, but only NetBEUI is bound to file and printer
sharing.

Since the only hardware change on Computer B was a new disk drive to
hold the new Windows ME OS I really don't know what else to do at this
point.

Suggestions?

TIA.

Tom Young
