Hello All,

Just tried to setup my home network using D-Link Router Di-614+ (802.11b
compatible)
as well using D-Link DWL-650+ wireless network cards...

Here's what I have:
Desktop PC PIII 933 running Windows ME wired to router (works fine)
Notebook running Windows XP with D-Link DWL-650+ (lights working, indicates
signal strength good) no connection
Notebook running Windows 98 with D-Link DWL-650+ (lights working, indicates
signal strength good) no connection

I have checked through all manuals and tried all troubleshooting suggestions
to no avail. Does anyone know where I can go to assist me in going through
setup to insure that notebooks "see" the router.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Okay on EACH computer you MUST tell it to accept non secure
connections. Do a right click on the network icon in the tray and then
click on properties(I think) and a box will come up showing the
network card. Near the bottom of the box is a checkable box that talks
about accepting non-secure network connections, check it and your
network will work fine.

The read the manual about setting up WEP and changing the default admin
password. Also may wna to use MAC Address filtering. Unless of course
you want an open network that your neigbors can use; just make sure to
install ZoneAlarm.

I went through the same situation using the DLink router DI-514 and my
Toshiba laptop with built in wireless card. My IP numbers etc were all
correct (check with "ipconfig /all"). I tried everything that was suggested
to no avail.

THEN, I came across an obscure one time message in a message on a Toshiba
newslist which told of someone else who solved the problem by switching the
"Preamble type" on the router from short preamble (the default) to long
preamble. [Advanced/Performance in DI-514 interface]. Bingo, problem solved.
I do not know if this applies to the DI-614 but it is worth a try.

**Incidentally, I have no idea what the preamble is or why there would be a
short or long version. Maybe someone could explain.

Let me know if this helps.

Good Morning Jeff,

Thanks I tried this suggestion but no change.

My System running Windows 98 is working now that I adjusted settings to
autodetect.
But alas my System running Win XP still isn't... even after your suggestion.
But I went into
CMD ipconfig and system returned response as correct IP address / Subnet
Mask / Default gateway
with this I attempted to get into browser, no luck.
Went back into CMD ... and tried ipconfig / release. System returned "The
operation failed as no adaptor is in the state permissible for this
operation"

Any suggestions?

Thanks Rob

Good Morning Dan,

Thanks for your suggestion but still having problems with my system running
Windows XP.
I think I've narrowed problem to the ipconfig within CMD. When autodetect I
get no connection. When I key in correct IP Address / Subnet Mask / Default
Gateway same- no connection.

I used to have this notebook RJ45 cabled hub which worked fine, I tried
deabling this connection to no avail as well.
I seem to be using a bridge as well would this make a difference.
Any suggestions?

Thanks Rob

No suggestions. I'm no expert at this. The tip I gave was what did it for
me between my 2 XP PCs, but I am still unable to successfully go both ways
between my W98SE and XP desktops. :-(
My Network neighborhood is empty on the W98 desktop, though searching finds
the XP PCs and can even access their files. However the XP cannot access
the W98.

I'll watch what happens with your problem.

Hi Jeff,

I did some reading and it would seem that Win XP and D-Link DWL-650+ do have
some capability problems. I plan to go back to store and see if an
alternative card is available.

Thanks for you assistance,

Yes there is a problem. Apparently D-Link has two versions of the card;
on for XP. Call tech support.
