D-Link DSL300T - username length limit?

This is the latest stage in the ongoing saga of trying to help my
father-in-law get online on ADSL. First, he had to return a Speedtouch
330, which constantly froze his PC. He then got a Netgear DM602, which
we could never get to work, so that was returned. Now he's got a
D-Link DSL-300T.

So far we've successfully connected via the bt_test@startup_domain
test username, and that worked fine. Now comes the problem:
It appears that there is a limit of 32 characters for the ADSL
username in the DSL-300T's connection setup screen. If this is true,
it's a problem because his username (from Demon) is 34 characters
long. Can anyone confirm this limitation? Is there a firmware upgrade
for the D-Link that fixes this? If not, then I guess the simplest
solution may be to ask Demon to change his username to something a bit
shorter.

Clive this was discussed a couple of weeks ago. Have a look here
http://tinyurl.com/2bzgq I'm not sure of the outcome, you could maybe ping
MR_K and see how he got on.

cheers

Steven.

There seems to be a workaround here

Steven, thanks very much for the pointer. Although this workaround is
for the 504T, I'm hoping it will apply to the 300T as well.

Yeah I realised that when posting but since it seems to be a problem on a
couple of D-link models I thought the workarounds might also work with your
model.

D-Link are crap I bought a 504 last year and it was dropping the
connection and resetting to factory default every 24hrs or so took it
back and received a full refund from supplier . I noticed a couple of
weeks ago that they had brought out the 504T so bought one and after a
week this one started dropping connection called D-Link support last
Wednesday and the guy said they where not supporting the 504T at the
moment so that one has been returned to supplier also.
Stuff D-Link .
Grant .

D-Link are excellent!

The only problem I have ever had with my DSL-504 (not the latest "T"
version) was due to a timing turnaround problem accessing a small
number of websites. A quick phone call on their 0800 917 5063 support
line last December (Christmas week!) was answered by a very helpful
support guy in Denmark who e-mailed the latest firmware 5 minutes
later which fixed the problem. I also have a DWL-700 AP wireless
access point and can't recommend them highly enough.

If it helps the support e-mail came from
(E-Mail Removed) which may provide alternative support.

Anyone who has seen Grant Crozier's posts in this and other NGs, will be
aware that he doesn't recognise shades of grey!

I have to say I agree with Phil to a large extent. It's not crap if the
support is good.

There's been times I've recommended stuff and it's gone wrong, but in
such a way new firmware or drivers could fix it. In some cases I even
carried self-burned replacement driver CDs.

I've had little experience of D-Link so it sounds very much like they
would be worth considering.

Just wanted to give a quick update.

The workaround of backing up the configuration to an XML file,
editing the username in that and then restoring, worked a treat.
My father-in-law's ADSL is now working fine.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
