D-Link DI604, Blueyonder but no Internet

I have just bought a D-Link DI604 broadband router to connect 4 PCs to
the Internet. I am currently on Telewests Blueyonder network but am
unable to connect to the Internet with the router. I have followed the
instructions to the letter, including asking it to assign ip addresses
dynamically and booting up the cable modem, then the router and finally
a PC, to no avail.

I have registered the MAC addresses for all devices with blueyonders
selfcare web page including the MAC address for the broadband router,
The PC is being assigned an internal address in the 192.168.x.x range
but the status page on the router shows that the WAN link is not being
assigned an address. It starts of by stating that DHCP client is
connecting, then after a few seconds states that the DHCP client has
been disconnected. The WAN links ip address, subnet mask, default
gateway and DNS settings remain at 0.0.0.0. I have even tried manually
configuring the DNS settings on the main PCs network card and via the
advanced setting. Finally I have reset the modem and asked it to clone
the address of the main PC, to no avail, I still cannot get to the
internet.

When I switch on a second PC, it is also assigned an address in the
192.168.x.x range. I know the Internet connection is working as I can
get to the internet when the cable modem is connected directly to the
PCs network card. Previously all PCs were connected using Internet
Connection Sharing which I have disabled in order to use the broadband
router. All the relevant lights on the modem and router are on. But
still nothing.

I bought this router after intensive research and so far I'm not
impressed. Is there something I'm missing. I'd appreciate it if someone
acould come up with some other suggestion before I send it back.

First off:-

Turn Off Pc, Cable Modem and Router. Leave for 1 Minute..

Second :-

Turn on Cable Modem (leave on for couple of minutes) then router then Pc.

Thirdly:-

Select Dyanamic Ip in Router then make sure that in you "Internet
Connections" (on your Pc) the "TCP/IP is set to "Automatic" On both..

If these steps don`t help you then I can`t help further but you may need to
make sure you are using "Straight Through Ethernet" Cables..

Good Luck

From a Fellow 604 user..

i have this router too, but on ntl, the way i made it work was

got the cable modem installed, plugged in the modem to the router, turned on
the router (it was already on as it was acting as a hub for my house mates
and me) the modem booted, had already set my PC to DHCP, reset my pc (as it
was already on) and then once that was done i got an ip 192.168.0.1 and then
hara it worked, shame the router doesn't have load balancing, as i really
wanted that feature.

Your problem is caused by a mismatch in MAC addresses between what
Blueyonder has registered for your connection and your router. When you
first connected a PC, Blueyonder will have "grabbed" the NIC card MAC
address from your PC and will now only accept connections from that MAC
address.

When you replace it with a router, you have two options. One is to register
the router MNAC address with Blueyonder, the second is to find out the
original PC MAC address and get the router to "spoof" that MAC address on
behalf of all the PC's connected to it.

MAC is Media Access Control - a hardware sort of ID used to control access
onto routers, which is exactly what Blueyonder are doing to you.

it looks like a mac address issue.
the only mac address that by will see is the mac of the router.
use the mac from the computer that was first connected to the cable
connection and spoof that in the router. there is a set of boxes to do this
in the router config web page.

you only need to register the router mac address, either that or plug
the router into the network card of the machine that is already
registered and have it spoof (clone) the mac address of that and then it
will work with the router. the clone is the quickest method to get up
and running

as you havent done that and have reigstered multiple mac address's i
would go back in, delete them all apart from your original one and your
routers (original just in case router dies and so can still get access)
- power down your cable modem, router for ten mins or so .... then power
cable modem, wait a few mins then power router on ...

ive just replaced my dlink di-604 i use with blueyonder with a wireless
linksys setup ... the di-604 was doing stirling work for several months
and works well with telewest

Thanks, i tried out your suggestions to no avail, however when I reset
the router to factory setting and then ran the wizard i finally
managed to get an ip address, hopefully it will work with the other
PCs when they connect. I'll let you know how it goes.

I actually tried both of these suggestions, initially i registered the
routers MAC address and used that, then i tried spoofing the MAC
address of the registered network card. That did'nt help. From
experience it take some time for for the cable modem to acknowledge
that a different MAC address is being used to connect to the internet
even though the new MAC address has already been registered. I've had
this problem when my PC went down and i had to use my laptop.

Anyway i've finally managed to get it working although I am curious to
know whether using to devices at the same time will affect the speed.
