D-Link DI-604 as router/firewall only ?

Hi,

(if this is not an appropriate NG, please redirect me)

does anyone know if I can use a D-Link DI-604 as router only ?
I do have a DSL modem that is used to connect to my ISP with a static IP
address. This modem has a built-in swith and some networking features that I
don't want to use. What I would like to do is to connect the DI-604 right
behind my modem and use its routing/firewall features (i.e. not using the
DI-604 to establish an Internet connection). Do I have to use a static IP on
the D-link WAN port ?

Internet <---> (Static External IP) Modem (Static Internal IP) <---> (Static
WAN IP) D-Link DI604 <---> SBS network

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Xavier

It really depends on the properties of the modem-switch rather than the
D-Link. Which device is going to do NAT? You would really want the
modem/switch to do nothing to the incoming traffic but forward everything to
the D-Link's WAN interface. Otherwise the traffic for the private LAN will
never be delivered.

You will also need to turn off some of the D-Link's features that will
conflict with Active Directory. The sbs server and all the client machines
will need to use the local DNS server but use the D-Link as their default
gateway. You will also need to decide whether the D-Link or the sbs server
does DHCP.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your confirmation and hints. I got it working right now by using
a static IP as WAN IP in the DI-604. DHCP is handled by the SBS and disabled
on the DI-604. NAT is handled by the DI-604 as well.

Thanks,

Xavier
