D-Link 621 Router and Win98

I have a D-Link 621 router configured for DHCP. I have a winXP Pro machine
connected to it and I am able to get to the internet.

My problem is the Win98 machine (host name: Pavilion). I have installed NIC
successfully and set the TCP/IP settings for the adapter to Auto IP to get
from router. My Router log says it leased the ip address to "Pavilion
192.168.0.100".

When I run winipcfg, Win98 machine it's always:
DNS: 192.168.0.1
NODE: Broadcast
IP: 169.254.92.176 <-- don't know why this is
Mask: 255.255.0.0
DHCP Server: 255.255.255.255

My D-Link router is 192.168.0.1 for gateway.
My xpPro is 192.168.0.101
Log says Pavilion was leased 192.168.0.100

I have tried to set static and set router to issue static to 192.168.0.100
from DHCP, released and renewed, restarted router and still nothing. I am
not able to ping my router or xp machine. Has anyone seen this before?
it's really driving me crazy!

Thanks for any suggestions, Todd

It looks as if your Win98 machine does not recognize the DHCP message
from the router assigning the 192.168 address.

169.254 is an address block to be used in local networks where DHCP
services are not available (local configuration). This seems consistent
with your Win98 machine reporting 255.255.255.255 for DHCP server.

I suggest you try investigating your Win98 configuration.

Incidentally: Have you (re-)installed networking on your Win98 system
with the installation file that should be created on your XP system?

regards Sven

Thanks for the reply Sven. It's been a while since I've used win98, when
you say re-install networking are you suggesting I go to control panel >
network and uninstall all adapter's, protocol's, and clients? Then add them
again?

The Win98 configuration is setup for Share-level access, no users, all users
use the same preferences and settings, primary netowork logon is Windows
Logon.

This computer is a friend of mine who was using SBC>Yahoo Dial up account
and wants to go to DSL. SBC said she couldn't go to DSL with Win98. She
doesn't have the money to buy a new computer (HP Pavilion 4455 - PII 400Mhz
Celeron, 128MB Ram, 6.4 GB HD Win98 original version). I gave her a ram
update and a NIC and thought I could get her online through a router (that
would come with DSL package) via DHCP.

I said I would try it through my configuration before she did anything. I
have D-link 621 and running XP Pro works fine. I am not using Microsoft's
Internet Connection Sharing.

D-Link's website had configuration settings for Win98 that I followed when
configuring the TCP/IP:
IP: obtain automatically
Gateway: 192.168.0.1 -- D-Link router
DNS: Enable DNS, Host:"Pavilion", Domain:<leave blank>, DNS Search
Order:192.168.0.1
Bindings: Set to Client for Microsoft Networks

Other than these steps I am not sure why it is not getting the DHCP message
as you suggested.
Todd

They can use Win98 with SBC/Yahoo DSL, I'm doing it right now. You do need
an XP machine to install the software on and set up the account, email
addresses etc. After that you can uninstall all the SBC/Yahoo software.
Try changing primary network logon is Windows Logon to Client for Microsoft
Networks.

Also: set the Wins configuration tab to Use DHCP for Wins Resolution.
Delete the entry under gateway it should be blank. DNS configuration should
be set to disable. Eventually you'll probably want to add under bindings
file and printer sharing for microsoft networks.

Limit yourself to protocols.

I am not sure to what extent it is necessary to actually uninstall first,
but
the documentation on configuring networks on Windows XP states that if
you have a network also including Win9x systems you should create a
network installation disk on (using) your XP system and then use this disk
to install the network on every 9x system you have in your network.

I did this and removed all the protocols that were redundant on my 9x
systems (yes, I do have a mixture of systems) and have had little problems
afterwards.

regards Sven
