D-Link 504 problem

Hi All,
I am using a D-Link 504 router, which has been working perfectly for
the last eight to ten months. My computer has always been selected as
192.168.0.2. For some reason it has now become 192.168.0.4 which i
can`t work out because i only have three computers on the network. Can
anyone suggest why this would change for no reason.Thanks.

I assume you're talking DHCP right?

Probably happened because your lease on that machine expired then another
machine grabbed it before you turned that one back on. Check your other
machines. There is probably an option somewhere to reserve IPs in DHCP, but
then if you want the 0.2 address for that machine, just make it static!

Without altering the range of addresses that the 504 allocates
addresses from to exclude 192.168.0.2, that would be a bad move, since
it could lead to two machines attempting to use 192.168.0.2 (one iwth
the address set "statically", the other allocated by DHCp from the
504).

Yes sorry, this would obviously involve moving the range of addresses. Also
as I said there might be an option to reserve addresses to a MAC. But I
don't have a 504 so I can't comment.

Hi,
So if i was to turn all the machines OFF, then turn mine on first what
you are saying is it should be allocated the 0.2 ip. I will give this a
try.Thanks.

Depends. Because leases last for a set period (usually 6-12 hrs). You might
have to release the leases on all machines before doing this

Hi,
In an attempt to resolve the problem i disconnected all machines with
the exception of mine. Re booted the router and my computer, but the
router still insists on allocating 04 instead of 02 like it always has
done. The other thing is that if i take a look at the DHCP allocation
table for the router, it has nothing in it. Should it not show all the
computers connected to it ???

Yes, it should ...

1) Have you checked that the network connection in your computer is
set to obtain an IP address automatically, and hasn't been set to use
192.168.0.4?

2) So that you can check the setup, here are the appropriate settings
from my 504, taken from the web management pages:
Configuration->Ethernet IP Address,
Configuration->DHCP Configuration on LAN

Configuration
Ethernet IP Address

MAC Address "Unique to your system"

IP Address 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 (/24)

DHCP Configuration on LAN

Start IP Address 192.168.0.2
End IP Address 192.168.0.254
Netmask 255.255.255.0 (/24)
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
Leased Time 2 hour
Primary DNS "Unique to your system"
Secondary DNS "Unique to your system"
Primary WINS "Unique to your system"
Secondary WINS "Unique to your system"
Domain Name "Unique to your system"
State enabled

3) Please, also, have a look at Maintenance->Update Firmware, for your
software version.

Hi Derek,
Just a couple of things that are different.
Leased Time is 72 hours, which should not make any difference.
Current Firmware Version R2.02.b2t8uk which looks very much out of
date.
ADSL driver Version 1.3.5.03182002.0001 is the same.

Hi Derek,
Thanks to you and everyone else for all your help. I am off to download
the revision and read up exactly what is required to update the
firmware. I will let you know how i get on. Thanks again.
