Hey folks,

Just bought a D-Link 2000AP (F/W1.7) for my Linux network. I need to do
some configuration but, despite claiming compatibility with Netscape
6.0, the configurator won't work with the latest Mozilla release or any
of the other Gecko browsers I have on my systems.

I'm actually so pissed off about this, I feel like recommending that
Linux/FreeBSD advocates to give this kit a wide berth. It's probably
very capable, but has been let down badly by shoddy development and
testing of the MSIE-compatible software. I feel like reversing the Volvo
over the f***ing thing!

Does anyone have any helpful advice or do I really have to borrow a PC
with Microsoft's shyte on it in order to set it up?

Fuming,
Iain.

Have you set a static tcpip address for your pc in the range of 192.168.0.x

While I'm not familiar with that specific product nor its requirements,
I will recommend the following: ensure that the Moz has cookies, java,
javascript, etc. enabled. Many of the config utilities in these
consumer products require these technologies to fully function.

I usually don't engage in promiscuous browsing with these technologies
enabled on my browsers, but I do require them to be on in order to fully
configure some of my equipment.

If the above recommendation does NOT remedy the issue, then by ALL
MEANS, spare no opportunity to give your heartfelt recommendation at
each and every opportunity you have to inform others of the kit's
shortcommings.......:-)

As a GNU/Linux/BSD user, I encounter limitations like this quite
frequently. And like you, I spare no chance to voice my dissatisfaction
at the myopia I find which manufacturers engage in.

If all else fails, download and install the Opera browser for Linux.
You can set it to "spoof" Internet Exploder browser, and this usually
"fools" stooooopid hardware sufficiently to accomplish the necessary task.

Best of Luck!

Static ip addr in the range 192.168.0.0/8, as it said in the
instructions. It's the software that doesn't work. I've even
double-checked Valentin's suggestions and Mozilla 1.5 doesn't want to
know -- and frankly, I don't think it's Mozilla's fault.

Borrowed a portable that was still infected with XP, and I used MSIE to
set the D-Link box up -- man, that rankles. I think D-Link should
buck-up their ideas and start developing compliant configurator pages
that are platform and browser independant, like they should be. There is
no reason on Earth for a Wireless-AP to be Windows/MAC dependant. Not
everyone has Windows/MacOSX installed; not everyone wants or needs them.

Cheers,
Iain.
