Customize Services and Ports

Dear Sirs,

I am using Windows Server 2003 as the router for my home network, and also
as my webserver (over my dsl connection). Everything is setup and working
fine, all the computers on my home network have access to the internet
through the server, and my webpage can be accessed over the internet.

However, I have also setup so that when I am not at home, I can connect to
the home network through VPN, and I can access my server through Remote
Desktop. However, I have found that many open wireless hotspots only allow
you access to certain ports, basically ports 21, 80 and 443, because these
are the most commonly use ports. What this means is that I cannot connect to
remote desktop or vpn from these connections. The solution I found for remote
desktop was to use a Linksys router (WRT54g) and forward port 443 on the
public interface to port 3389 at IP address 192.168.123.254 (my server's
private IP address). This worked wonderfully, I would just connect to my
server remotely by entering the public ip address and ":443" in the remote
desktop connection.

However, I have found the the linksys router is rather unreliable, so I've
decided to use my server as the router instead. The problem I have now is
that I cannot edit any of the regular ports in Routing and Remote Access.
Remote Desktop is permenantly set to use incoming port 3389, I can't edit
that at all, or delete it and create a custom one. What can I do to edit it?
Is there some sort of registry hack I can use? Since I don't have an FTP
server or HTTPS running on my server, I would like to use these ports for
something else.

Thanks,
Stephen Nothnagel.

Check out this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306759

Make the registry change, allow the port through your Router and your set.

Hope this helps,

Hey Louis,

Thanks for the reply. I thought of doing that registry hack thing, but I'd
much rather have full control over my ports and services. I use Windows
Server 2003 because I'll like full control over my network, so it pisses me
off that I can forward incomming port 444 to port 3389 on my private network,
but I can't do the same with port 443. Why can't I edit the default
servies/ports, or just delete them? I find it very stupid of Microsoft to not
allow them to be changed, especially since most people who are using server
2003 are proffessionals and unlikely to make the silly mistakes with port
forwarding that a novice might make.

Anyway, does anyone know how to change or delete the default services and
ports?

Thanks agian,
Stephen.
