Customer Port Tweaking

Eclipse have launched a new packet of ADSL services whereby customers
adjust their service to suit how they surf.

It allows customers to give priority to services they use and reduce
priority for services they don't use.

Now I know ISPs are using many tricks to adjust their speeds and
bandwidth etc but if I don't use FTP (For example)why should I have to
reduce its priority.

I can't see how if I reduce priority for a service I don't use it would
improve the speed of the ports I do use.

I can't see why they might be using "traffic shaping" in a misleading way.
The ISP is only doing this for when customers complain about performance.
They will say it's your own fault for not understanding how it works!
If you want to adjust traffic shaping yourself on your own PC, get a copy
of CFOSSPEED. It works brilliantly and really speeds things up.

You're right, it won't. Who said it would?

That is what I thought.

www.eclipse.net.uk is the ISP who have introduced it along with
extending their 'peak' times from 6pm to midnight now for 9am to midnight.

I have actually been quite pleased with them to date though.

Sounds exactly like the Enta family of products where there is no
ISP-based shaping at all. (Roughly, available bandwidth at any moment is
divided equally amongst all online customers.) If I want to prioritise
VoIP - or BitTorrent for that matter - then it's up to me to do so.

Are you saying that a percentage of bandwidth is tied up doing nothing
just waiting for (say) ftp commands which could otherwise be
re-allocated to (say) web browsing? I find that hard to believe.

Yes.

You pay your £20/month and you are allocated N Mb/s. It's up to you to
decide whether to use it or not. (Actually I omitted to say there's a
30GB/300GB cap. Sorry about that omission.)

Sounds like a shitty con trick to me.

Just had a look at the eclipse forum on thinkbroadband.com and it seems
there are lots of negative posts - including people being moved to
Tiscali kit.

They are nothing to do with Entanet - who are a decent ISP ( working
through resellers like ukfsn, adsl24 and others).

Andy.
