crossover network with XP

Got two machines both using XP. Lan 10/100 cards fitted, Crossover cable
linking both, network wizard run on both. Network set-up both machines see
each other and files can be transfered.

Problem is, try as I might, even though the second machine can see the ADSL
modem of the first mach it refuses to use it and the host machine shows
limited or no connectivity.

Suggestions please!

enable ics and turnoff firewall?
