Could anyone explain to me why I can connect my D-link 900ap+ to a stand
alone PC
either with a crossover ethernet cable or use a straight trough cabel?

In both cases I can access http://192.168.0.50 which is the AP default
address.

Bertil,

Perhaps there is newer hardware that has the capability to negotiate the
connection polarity at the ethernet port. The current document (PDF)
however indicates on page "4" that a crossover is required for
connection to a computer ... and a straight cable for connection to a
router or switch etc etc.

Are you sure you are accessing 192.168.0.50 via an ethernet cable and
not wireless ??

There is a lot of equipment that auto sences what sort of cable is plugged
in - it should make connecting equipment together a lot easier - no more
patch leads/crossover leads - use the same cables everywhere

The manual says (on a picture):

MDII RJ-45 Ethernet Port
.. Straight-Through cable is required when connecting to a router or switch
.. Cross-Over cable is required to connect to a computer

and I don't know what "MDII" stands for.

I don't know either... I just expected you to find the "auto sense"
mentioned on that page. Maybe it just isn't mentioned ;-)

Are you sure that you have one straight cable and one crossover cable?
Maybe the PC can also do autosense, but I haven't heard of that in the
past.
