How difficult it must be in the Microsoft C++ development suite to
cross-compile for other chipsets and OS's. It's a bit like MS's refusal to
allow users the right to mount and read any type of filesystem.
The Unix (Solaris) and Linux development suites, on the other hand, allow
incredible flexibility when it comes to cross-compiling. Once the
opensource code editing and copying problem is put to bed in the knowledge
that pre-compiled binaries are not source-able and may be distributed
without fear of the source being copied, it would behoove many of the
worlds manufacturers to have some Linux/Unix machines available to compile
binaries for the drivers of their products. Some that come to mind are:
Hauppauge
Genius
Sony
Kodak.
Then they would be able to target the 15-20% of PC users whose OS preference
is *nix.
