Critical Update #2

I tried this question about a week ago, but the answer I
received from Chris H didn't make sense or lead me to a
solution. I've installed the Critical Update for my MN710
router, but I continue to receive a popup message that a
Critical Update is available. I've been unable to disable
this popup. It's more of an annoyance than anything.
I've tried going to Windows Update and can find no
reference to the Broadband update. I'd appreciate someone
giving me a clue.

Apparently you're still running the fancy software interface, which is not
compatible with Windows XP SP2 without the update here:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/br...DLoadMain.mspx
Uninstall the Broadband Networking Utility from within Add or Remove
Programs and then do the firmware upgrade. You can simply manage the base
station from the base station's IP in your browser address line.

Chris, Thank you for your patience. I hate to be a pain
but could I ask you for a few clarifications. Following
your instructions as I understood them: 1) I removed my MS
Broadband Utility program; 2) I connected my MN710 router
to my desktop computer with the blue ethernet cable; 3) I
ran the MS update program from a previous download
session. In running the Wizard, it indicated that it was
ready to update my various components, but couldn't find
any of them. I reconnected my router to my DSL modem and
have a connection to the Internet (obvious, as I am now
using my connection to write this inquiry). I do not
appear to have a Broadband Utility now. I'm afraid that I
am not computer smart enough to understand your last
sentence: "...manage the base station from the base
station's IP in your browser address line." This may
sound dumb but how do I do this. Is it correct that I
don't have the Broadband Utility program now? I'd
appreciate any help here.

You just go into your browser, and instead of typing in a web site address,
type in the default address of the router - 192.168.2.1. The method is
described in the User's Guide.

I don't understand why you're disconnecting your Ethernet cable from the
computer I assume you've used to previously set it up. You need not have
done that, and don't need to turn your modem off and on either. If you've
got an "always on" DSL connection, you don't need to touch the modem or base
station.

Chris, Thank you. I'm learning as I go here. I have a big
house with one computer in the basement and the 2nd
computer on the 2nd floor and in opposite ends. The only
reasonable way to get both computers connected to the
Internet via DSL was to locate the DSL modem and wireless
router approximately half way between the two computers.
It has been working although my signal is on the low side
as I'm further away. I had to disconnect the router and
connect with an Ethernet cable as the instructions
indicated that the update could not be accomplished
wirelessly. I realize that using Ethernet cables to both
computers would be nice (one cable would be approx. 15'
long and mine would be approx. 75') and there would still
the problem of stringing the cables in some practical
manner. Again, I really appreciate your help in this
matter.

Okay, I see what you're doing. There are a lot of very good, detailed
networking columns by MVP Barb Bowman here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/bowman.mspx So
the easiest way to update is connected by Ethernet, so using the shortest
distance would be your best bet. Just disable (not uninstall) your wireless
device on the closest machine, then run an Ethernet cable to the router.
You don't need to shut off the router or anything else. When you connect
via the Network Interface Card in your computer you'll just be seen as a
wired system and be able to update.

Chris,
This will be my last reply. I believe that I have
everything working because of your help. Thank you for
your time and patience. It's been very much appreciated.
