Creating an Internet Server

Hello,

We are about to launch a service to members of staff where they can access a
sharepoint server from outside the corporate network via the internet.

I have never done this before.

Obviously I want to do this in a way that is secure and doesn't compromise
anything.

What is the best practice for setting this up? The site needs to prompt
members of staff for their network username and password.
How do I/where do I get an SSL certificate for the server?
What else should I know?

I would use SSL certificate. Or use VPN if you can.
