I need to know how to create a child domain. I have read this article
already http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc787706.aspx but I am
scared to do a dcpromo on one of our existing DCs. We have 3 DCs here all
running Win Server 2003 and when I tell one of them to do a DCPROMO they
flash this message at me.

"This domain controller is a Global Catalog server. Global Catalogs are
used to process user logons. You should make sure other Global Catalogs are
accessible to users of this domain before removing Active Directory from this
computer."

If I say OK to the dialog box then the next screen tell me "Removing Active
Directory converts this domain controller to a member server..."
"...all user accounts in this domain will be deleted"

??? I don't want to remove anything I just want to add a child domain. 1st
of all amd I supposed to do this on a non-DC box and it will assign it its
own child domain name? If so this won't work because the "server" I wanted
to do this for is running Windows XP.

A domain controller can only be in 1 domain. The DC you are using is
obviously in a domain already. If you want to make it a DC in a child domain
you will have to remove AD by running dcpromo and run dcpromo a second time
and choose the correct option to create a child domain.

OK thanks, I was just thinking I should be able to create a child domain like
a subfolder. But it has to be on a totally different machine. I need to
find another server to throw it on.

Hello Caesar,

For creaeting a subdomain you have to use a another server not a domain controller.
A DC can only be member of one domain not more.
