Crashing Netgear DG814

I have recently installed a DG814 in my small office. I have turned off NAT
as I am using the ISA component of SBS 2000 for firewall etc. Every few days
(and particularly at weekends) the router stops working. Power cycling it
gets it going again. I have downloaded and installed the latest firmware.

I haven't been able to discern any pattern in the failure. It's not at
regular intervals for instance. I become aware of the failure particularly
when I am attempting to get remote access via VPN (from my home
ADSL-connected network) which works OK most of the time. It's possible that
it's the VPN access which is crashing the router but my evidence for this is
flimsy.

Is this a known problem? Does anyone have a solution? I couldn't find
anything about it on the Netgear website.

Thanks for your help if you can.

Paul - Coventry

I used to have a DG814 that was foreve crashing - the cause being that
it didn't seem like high volumes of UDP traffic. As far as I'm aware
this has never been resolved even with the latest firmware (4.9rc3).
When I suffered from the problem, Netgear support were next to useless,
suggesting I had a faulty model; it was replaced and exhibited exactly
the same problems. My solution to the problem was to get a different
ADSL switch - in my case a Thomson SpeedTouch 510v4, which has run like
a treat for the last 8 months.

What firmware has it got installed? Early ones had a problem with VPN
passthrough.

If its not one of the affected one, a lot of users, myself included have the
router crashing seemingly at random at any time between a few days and just
over a week.

Bad product - sorry!
I am currently using firmware v4.9rc3 and it's the best I've yet tried.
Other users report good results with other versions: I suppose you must just
try them and see which if any works for you. As another said, you might be
best just to get a new router. Another (slim) possibility is that you line
suufers from an unreasonable amount of 'noise', which I have heard can
cause this also.
Try this for the beta v4.9rc3...

I think (although I can't get netgear support to confirm this) that the
DG814 has problems with UDP. Perhaps it's high levels of traffic, perhaps
it's somthing else.
When I run the Comanche 4 computer game, when it tries to connect to
Novaworld (novalogic's on-line game center) the router crashes and I have to
power cycle. I'm runnin the 4.9rc3. I hope the netgear firmware development
team are aware of these bugs cauz I don't see how they can fix these issues
if they don't listen to the customers.
Perhaps you could try emailing support and asking them to escalate the case
to the people responsable for firmware although I don't know what this will
do.

On the other hand, I use the Cisco VPN client to VPN into our Cisco 3000 VPN
Concentrator to gain access to the work network. The router never had any
problems with this arrangement (although a windows xp client on the same lan
did but thats a whole different ball game.)

It's worth pointing out that the DG814's support for protocal's is very
flakey and dosn't comply with RFC's particularly. This includes it's
handling of DHCP and NTP. Maybe if the router was written to comply with the
RFC's then it'd work a little better.

Im wondering if the NAT table is filling up causing the problems. Certainly
i can pretty much guarantee to crash it by running eMule and WinMX at the
same time and leaving it overnight.
Othertimes with less traffic it takes longer - all would fit with some
buffer filling up.

Neither is its PPP implementation hence the units inability to reconnect
after disconnections in certain ciscumstances.

Thanks for all the (depressing) advice. I'm currently on firmware version
4.8. I'll try 4.9 (which, interestingly, cannot be found on the US website
or on the UK one, but then you can't find anything on the UK website!).

This is the 2nd router I've bought which doesn't seem to work properly (the
other was a D-link DSL604+). The only one which has operated without problem
or intervention was the BT labelled one supplied when I first implemented
ADLS 2 years ago!

Well, modem/routers seem to be a little over priced anyway, but if you want
to get one that works, you gotta pay EVEN MORE than overpriced.
I don't have any experience with the top of the range modem/routers but I'd
guess that the Cisco one would do the job well. (803 series or somthing?)
Not only that you can program just about every aspect of it through the
wonderful IOS.
As the saying goes: you get what you pay for. (Personally I'd expect a lot
more out of the DG814 for £80 but like i said... over priced.)

Even more so now that Netgear have decided to abandon the DG814 when their
new superior router comes out. No more firmware I guess. The DG834 I think?
