I've heard about metropolitan solutions - I'm thinking about a project
which will wire a whole country using 802.11b - has anybody out there
done this sort of thing, and what technology product did they use?

The area in question is small - 5km x 2km, and benefits from a large
hill in the middle which has direct LOS to most points that will be
within the service area - I know marcin had a WhipLL product - what
alse are people using?

Monaco?

The Republic of Nauro is 20 square kilometers, so it must be too big:

I'm going to go on the assumption that you meant "county". Hell, any
decent "carrier class" (for our purposes today, that means built better
than the usual consumer stuff) outdoor AP or indoor AP in an outdoor
enclosure with an 8dbi omni antenna should cover that. You could look at
smartBridges, Tranzeo, Cisco, Lucent/Proxim/ORiNOCO equipment. If you
want to stray from 802.11b, there's many others including Alvarion,
Raylink, WaveRider, on and on.

No, Country is right.

The concept is that the client should be able to use a bulk standard
(and cheap) 802.11b card without external antanna - surely range is
always going to be an issue.

This is way outside my area of expertise, but I was assuming a
cell-based antenna on the hill talking to antenna-equipped APs that
provide the actual coverage. I'm sure there are loads of metropolitan
networks out there that are far cleverer and I'd love to know how
others are doing this...

This is where you're always going to have the problem. People struggle
to get coverage from one corner of their house to another, how do you
anticipate covering all these properties to all their rooms with the
same amount of power that they're allowed for an AP in their house?

Stick to offering coverage in the main street perhaps and at the popular
locations maybe?

Keen people can opt for an external antenna and fixed installation, not
such a big problem.

David.

The GSM900 coverage has big holes along Main Street
TETRA sucks. 802.11b has no chance apart from hot
spots like the marinas and airport, besides we all
has ADSL.

External antennas is against the rules in da houses
in Gib.
