I am just coming to the end of the bt contract and it seems that other
suppliers provide a much better deal eg tiscali and sky. We are
talking about £30 per month when taking account of calls as well. Am I
missing something fundamental?
Agreed that BT broadband is relatively expensive and then there's their
abysmal call-centre in India! I used to be with them and moved away as soon
as I could.
As others have said/will say - don't go anywhere near Tiscali. They're
cheaper but their service is terrible.
Other ISPs to avoid like the plague (based on reports here): AOL, Pipex,
Orange, TalkTalk.
Sky has reasonably good reports but you need to check if their service is
available in your local exchange.
Personally, I would avoid tying yourself into a broadband+phone package from
a service provider, as putting all your eggs in one basket is not a good
thing if/when you get problems. I would advise staying with BT for telephone
service and getting your broadband from a good (not heavily advertised) ISP
with a call-centre in the UK, and - most importantly perhaps - who don't tie
you in to a 12 or 18 month contract. Most good ISPs will offer a monthly
contract and some even offer an early get-out if you don't like what you've
been provided with.
Some names that come to mind that fit those requirements:
IDNet
Plusnet
Zen
(there are others).
Suggest you check out the excellent comparison site
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ before making any decisions and then check
out the websites of the ISPs that appeal to you.
All of them have various tariffs based on your estimated usage.
If you go for cheap and cheerful you'll get cheap and nasty!
Hope that helps
