correct terms to search under?

Hello,

I have two desktop computers at home, and I want to network them. In
order to do the research, I'll need to know what the terms are to look
for on google. Can someone please give me the names the following
tasks are called, so that I can look this stuff up?

1. reading and writing to a file on the other machine (file sharing?)
2. both connect to internet at the same time, using either computer's
modem
3. remote power up / shutdown
4. view each other's screens
5. one computer runs Win98SE; the other runs both Win98SE and Linux
6. instant messaging to the user on the other machine
