Coonecting Apple Lan with NT Lan - Help

Hi,

I have a bit of a problem and I was hoping I could get a bit of advice.

Currently I have two independant networks running, the main network with 6
NT servers and over 400 machines and a small Lan made up of an apple G4
server and 10 machines running Mac OS X.

The problem is that I have now been asked to provide internet access to the
Mac's, by just connecting the machiens individually into the existing
network without the Apple server it is simple to achieve this but I was
wondering how it would work if I connected the entire Lan which they are on
into the main one.

I would have to turn of dhcp on the G4 server to allow the NT server to
assign Ip's but would the Apple machines know to look to the G4 server to
log in etc. and just have the internet configured to go through the proxy.
Or would I have to use a router and have the Apple Lan on a seperate subnet
mask?

I dont really know how to go about this so any help would be much
appreciated.

I think you answered your own question.

They either have to be all in the same subnet together, or you will have to
have a router between the subnets.

What the machines "log into" has no relationship to the topology of the
network design.

Thanks for the reply.

What I had thought of doing was to patch the switch for the Apple network to
the Fibre switch on the main network.

My main concern really is that I have no experience with Apple computers, in
fact today was the first time I even used one, took me about 25 minutes to
work it out but I had it set up and logging into the proxy. I just wondered
if it was possible to have the G4 apple server running on the same network
without any conflicts.

I know this probably sounds stupid, have to start into this tomorrow and I
am just trying to do a bit of reading so that I have everything covered. I
would much rather just use the switch option than have to start trying to
configure the machines and using a router.

Probably will work fine as long as the MACs use IP addresses from the same
subnet and you don't have any address conflicts. If they use a different
subnet, then you will need a router between the subnets.

It's the same with me.

Just keep them in the same subnet and you won't need the router.

If you are running a proxy server, it should be just a matter of getting
the IP addresses and the proxy settings right on the Macs. Like you I have
no experience with Macs, but I have has a heap of Macs working sucessfully
through an NT proxy server.

I'm on the same team, I have about 40 macs running on my windows
2003/2000/xp/98 environment, with a g5 server as well, no conflicts, just
dont have 2 servers as dhcp servers.

Thanks for the replies.

Was working at it today, had all the Mac's seeing and logging onto the
proxy, problem is that one of the other administrators is now claiming that
this won't work and wants an additional network card placed in the G5 server
with the internet being routed through it. He keeps telling our manager
that this is the only way the Mac's can log onto their server. I even tried
showing him the system working but he is having none of it, he refused to
let me place the server on the network (maybe it was going to blow up).
Apparently the only options are either 2 network cards in the G5 or a
router.

I think I am just about to enter the stage of frustration where I either cry
or kill him.

I'd just kill him. It's more dignified. I can't believe he is being so
rediculas.

Yes, you can show him this message.
