Converting exchange to ADSL?

Hi all.

I have a pal and BT have just announced that his local exchange will be
upgraded and made broadband enabled early next year (he's chomping at the
bit to get broadband).

It got me thinking... what exactly do BT have to do to the exchange to make
it broadband enabled and how much on average does it cost them?

Wonder if anyone can spill the beans.... would be interesting.

Cost to enable an exchange varies - the average cost used to be £250,000
(but some were as high as a million I understand)

Each exchange needs a different amount of work depending on its current
state but for example:

1. Buying/fitting the ADSL equipment in the exchange
2. Upgrading the exchange (power, air conditioning, security etc) for ADSL
3. Installing/Lighting fibre from the exchange to BT's core data network
(often the most expensive part)

Regards
Sunil

Many thanks Sunil ... wow... must admit, I didn't think it would be that
expensive a job.

I guess it's understandable, in those circumstances, that BT would want to
ensure that ADSL was a viable concern in a particular area before lashing
out on the cost of conversion. I seem to remember reading about the
government last year giving BT 30 million towards the cost of conversions in
certain areas. It certainly looks like a lot of money still needs to be
pumped in before the whole of the UK is broadband enabled.

Thanks again for the info.
