I've got a box with 4 external NICs.

I'd assumed that in 'Advanced Settings' I could move the NIC to the top of the
'adapters and bindings' and have it be the primary NIC for the box, and have its
primary ip show up in a browser for whatIsMyIp.com

But, that is not the case.

How can I change the primary nic for a computer with 4 nics?

Bob - I think I resolved it. I took the default gatway off the other NICs and
was able to force the desired NIC to use the correct ip.

It was rather strange. win2003 switched the default ip an hour after I moved
the ips to what I thought was the default NIC.

Bob - one thing I don't understand.

One one of the NICs with no default gateway (which I presume would point to the
ISP's router), I can telnet into port 25 and see the Exchange Server.

This confuses me. I understand how it can see the packet arrive, but how can it
respond? It shouldn't be able to send out on that NIC without a default
gateway.

Is the packet coming in on the NIC without the default gateway, but returning on
the box's main NIC that does have a default gateway?

Or, does it know from the incoming packet how to reply (the incoming packet
passes thru the default gateway, so it uses this info to send the return packet
thru the NIC without the default gateway setting - effectively having a default
gateway at that moment to reply with)?

Thanks, Les Caudle

Correct. It won't return packets if it doesn't have the route except you have a manual route. Check the routing table.

Yes.
It doesn't have to take the same path,...it just has to get there.
