Correct. It won't return packets if it doesn't have the route except you have a manual route. Check the routing table.

Bob - one thing I don't understand.
One one of the NICs with no default gateway (which I presume would point to the
ISP's router), I can telnet into port 25 and see the Exchange Server.
This confuses me. I understand how it can see the packet arrive, but how can it
respond? It shouldn't be able to send out on that NIC without a default
gateway.
Is the packet coming in on the NIC without the default gateway, but returning on
the box's main NIC that does have a default gateway?
Or, does it know from the incoming packet how to reply (the incoming packet
passes thru the default gateway, so it uses this info to send the return packet
thru the NIC without the default gateway setting - effectively having a default
gateway at that moment to reply with)?
