Contracts and speed bump

I'm getting fed up with BT demanding a new 12 month contract just to
enjoy a free speed increase - do other ADSL ISPs do this? I know
Blueyonder doesn't, but I can't get cable in my office.

Many will if they have to pay BT wholesale to upgrade the line speed -
they can recoup that cost over 12 months.

They may also offer you the chance to just pay a one-off regrade fee and
continue on your current minimum term - not sure if BT Retail offer this
though.

You are not missing anything with not getting BY they supposedly gave
every 4Mb subscriber a free upgrade to 10Mb last year now they are in
the act of cutting the 10 to5 4 to 2 and 2 to 1 between 4 pm and
midnight every day . It is only supposed to be a trial in the NW
region at the moment but it will be rolled out nation wide before
long.

Hi,

Why are you purposely posting false and misleading statements? You
almost remind me of the infamous Ron Chew. Which reminds me I think
Neil McRae is still looking for his fiver.

Yes there are limited technical traffic management trials taking place
in one region. However these are targeted at specifically continuously
abnormally high traffic patterns at peak times only and affect only
about 5% of users during that peak period whilst improving the quality
of the service for the other 95% during the same time.

If you are going to post please at least try to be accurate.

I see nothing innacurate within his post.
You've just added the 5% thing...
Which you'll have people believe that it's 5% of 'bad boy' downloaders.
The 5% that are spoilin it for other users, the 5% which you will have
people believe justifies why you 'will' be introducin it across the
whole network.

But really it's the top 5% of whoever happens to be downloadin the most
data at the time.
Cud be the girl next door, simply downloadin/streamin a large file at
the time.
She just happens to be in the top 5% at that particular moment...
She isn't an abuser of the system.
She isn't even a 'heavy downloader'

Yes, he's talking bollocks, as the reason i know Blueyonder has bumped
up speeds (to 4Mb in our case) is because they have done so without any
new contractual obligation. I like BT's service, but as I'm probably
going to move office in 6 months to a cabled one I can't move it up to
the 8Mb they're offering without sacrificing six months rental.

Hi Gonz, I do miss your attempts at trolling on the blueyonder
internal support groups. :-)

However, was it not the case for the mass regrading from 2000 kbps to
DSL Max that BTW was making no charge. Seems a bit of a con for any
ISP to then act like it cost them a lot of cash...

Who said anything about a lot? Even a chargeable regrade is £5 or £11.

Of course, they will have to do some work to regrade the line (place
order with BT etc), so there is an admin element. And then there is a
profit margin to add.

But then, if they know you will be with them for a minimum 12 months
more, why not waive the above charges?
