Constant engaged tone - still make outgoing & incoming calls

Hi all,

I have a wierd problem with my broadband.

History:

I subscribed to AOL broadband through my BT line and everything was
fine for about a month or so. We live in a shared house and the others
could still use their dial-up internet to Freeserve with no problems.

Problems:

Suddenly the Freeserve would no longer allow them to send emails. This
is because our phone number was withheld when making calls (this was
never the case before - just happened somehow?). Freeserve told the
other tennat to prefix their dial-up with 1470. This works and they can
now use the intenet and email as normal.

My broadband no longer works, as soon as they fixed theirs mine broke.
I can not access the broadband line, my modem has a light to indicate
that it can access the line. This is now off. When I try to connect I
get the following error:

Attempt 1) [Home-DSL] Unable to find an appropriate DSL modem or
adapter to use for the connection. (24-04-04-028)

The other strange thing is that when we pick up the phone handset to
dial out we have an engaged tone. We can still make outgoing and
receive incoming calls though? How can this be? I have unplugged
everything from the phone line and plugged the phone handset directly
into the main socket and still the same situation.

Solution?

I assume that the 1470 thing had something to do with my broadband not
working but how do we fix it? Why do we get an engaged tone when
picking up the phone? How was out number suddenly withheld and how do
you stop this happening? If we phone a mobile now is says 'Private
Number' it used to display our home phone number?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am the one that got the
broadband, guess who is getting the blame!!!! Yep - ME.

Thanks in advance!!!!

G

If you call your mobile, but add 1470 before dialling, does it come up with
your number? - When I orderd broadband, we ended up with someone elses phone
number, as BT obviously got the lines mixed up!

Have you tried connecting the broadband directly to the master socket, after
removing the lower part of the face plate (assuming you have a socket you
can do this to!)

You say you have an engaged tone when you go to use the phone is this tone
exactly the same as an engeged tone, or is it jsut a pulsed dial tone? - If
it is a pulsed dial tone, it may be the BT answer phone - try calling 1571
and see if you have it!

Have you tried a different microfilter?

It turns out you were right, the 'engaged tone' was not that at all but
the BT answer phone that someone else had added to our line. I cleared
the messages off using 1571.

The reason I couldn't connect was pure coincidence that the modem of
the pc had disabled itself (somehow). It now all works fine. I think
with the 1470 and the engaged tone I was reading far too much into the
problem!!!

Cheers for pointing in the right direction.

G

Yep, all 1470 does is allow a withheld number to be sent for that call,
should affect your broadband.
