Connectiong 3 Pc using 1 USB wireless adapter and a MAC bridge

Ok I have a bit of a problem here. I have three computers that are
conntecting to the internet via a wireless adapater. A friend of mines is
letting me use his wireless signal from his router (linksys WRT54GX2 ) to
access the internet using wep. Now on one of my computers (machine1/Desktop)
there is a linksys wireless - b usb adapter (WUSB11) . Im using this to
capture the wireless signal. Machine 1 is also conntected to a Linksys 4 port
switch Wireless router (BEFW11S4) which has no internet access.

Connected to the 4 port switch (BEFW11S4) also is another desktop (Machine2)
and a laptop (Machine3) via wireless b connection using wep (I know i should
use wpa working on getting the laptops wireless card to reconize it. )

I used XP and bridged Machine 1 wireless connection, lan connection, and the
1394 connection. Once I did that All the computers could get on the net. This
is basicly how it's setup.

Friends Router(Cable Internet access WRT54GX2) -> Wireless Signal goes to
the linksys usb adapter (Machine 1) -> Signal goes to my linksys 4 port
switch -> machine 2 and 3 has net access.

Ok now when i try and go to the normal router address 192.168.1.1 via
windows explorer or IE7 sometimes I get my 4 port switch and sometimes I get
my friends router. If I get mines I have no internet access but my local
network is up and running fine. If I get my friends router then there is no
local network but I can get on the internet. It changes all the time. One
moment all the computers are on the internet and have no local network. Then
they're not on the internet and everyone can see/share files on the network.

Is there a way to I can keep on the internet and still see the network
resources ?

If you could help me solve this problem then you would really take me out of
a bind seeing as this is the only way i can get net for now.

Under such an arrangement you need a second Routing.
I.e. You host computer needs to use ICS to Route to your computers.

Actually the best way to set such a system is to get a Wireless card that
work for Game Boxes.
Those are actually Wireless cards with hardware drivers (
http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Modes.html ).
You can plug one of this cards to your Linksys WAN port and configure a
normal Network around your Wireless Router.

Can you spell "kluge"?

You have some old equipment, connected in a non-standard way. Which is
not to say that it won't work, but it might take a little doing.
Congratulations on making it work as much as it does.

First of all, using your WUSB11 on your friend's wireless g network may
(or may not) degrade the performance of his network. In the early days
of using 802.11g (2 or 3 years ago!) the routers didn't work so well in
mixed (b & g) mode. I assume that this has been dealt with, especially
with a device as new as the WRT54GX2 (but you certainly won't get the
"SRX" speed advantage).

Second, as to the encryption on your wireless LAN, you may have to
update the firmware for the BEFW11S4 and the driver(s) for the wireless
adapters on machines 1 and 3 in order to support WPA. There are several
different versions of this router; make sure you get the correct
firmware. There are at least 6 different versions of the WUSB11; I
don't know which -- if any -- of them support WPA. Similarly, I don't
know if the Netgear MA521 attached to machine 3 can support WPA.

Third, I'm not sure why you included the IEEE 1394 connection in your
bridge, but it shouldn't hurt.

Now on to your problem(s).

How have you connected machine 1 to the BEFW1154? It should be
connected to one of the 4 LAN ports, and not to the WAN port of the router.

There are at least two devices with the same IP on the same network.
Both your friend's WRT54GX2 and your BEFW11S4 have the address
192.168.1.1. This is Not Good. Disconnect your WUSB11 (so you know
that you can only connect to your own router), and enter the
configuration pages for the BEFW11S4 and change its LAN IP address to
something else in the same subnet, such as 192.168.1.25.

You also need to disable the DHCP server on your BEFW11S4, so that it
acts as an access point (wireless switch). By having the DHCP server on
your BEFW11S4 active, you are probably causing other difficulties for
your friend. Machine 1 is getting its IP address from your friend's
router. The fact that it assigned an address of 192.168.1.103 suggests
that your friend may have up to 3 computers of his own on the network
(100, 101, and 102). It's of course not clear, but it's likely that in
the info you posted, machine 2 is getting its IP address from your own
router. Thus, in addition to having two 192.168.1.1 devices (the two
routers), the network also probably has two 192.168.1.100 devices. This
also is Not Good. While you're in the BEFW11S4 configuration utility
changing its LAN IP, also disable its DHCP server.

And while you're there, also make sure that you have set the BEFW11S4 to
use a different SSID and a different wireless channel than your friend's
WRT54GX2.

What all of this does -- if it works -- is to place your 3 computers and
however many computers your friend has on the same LAN. That means he
can share your files and vice versa. If you'd rather not do that, then
forget the bridge and use ICS.

To use ICS on machine 1, delete the bridge you created and set up
Internet Connection Sharing instead: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126
There is one catch here: ICS unchangeably assigns an IP address of
192.168.0.1 to the network adapter on the LAN side (i.e., the network
adapter in machine 1). In order for the BEFW11S4 to communicate with
machine 1, you will have to change its LAN IP address to something on
the same subnet: use 192.168.0.2. Machines 2 and 3 will now get their
IP addresses from the DHCP Allocator component of ICS. They will be of
the form 192.168.0.x (rather than 192.168.1.x as they are now).

To answer a few of your questions, Yes he has 2 machines a desktop and a
laptop both with xp pro. Yes I know I am working with ancient stuff here. Its
all I got at my dispoles right now. Working on upgrading trust me.
