Just setup my 802.11a home network:

Trying to work out my transfer speeds as just transferred a 142,819,328 byte
file(139.472 Mb)
in 770 seconds (12 mins 50 secs)

Am I correct in thinking this is around 29-34 Mbps (if it is, I'm really
pleased )

You'd better ask the math-teacher and Google.

Try "802.11a bits byte kilobyte megabyte speed"

and buy a calculator.

142819328 / 770 = 185480 bytes per second
185480 Bps * 8 = 1483837 bits per second
1483837 bps / 1000000 = 1.48 megabits per second

A 30 Mbps speed will transfer at 3750000 Bps (38 seconds to transfer that
file)

I think there was too much data in the overhead.
