Connection sharing and AOL BB?

Hi All,

I was talking to a mate yesterday who mentioned he had another PC
hanging off his main PC with an Ethernet X over cable and the main PC
connected via USB to AOL (ADSL) BB.

He mentioned that although the second PC could 'see' the main PC (file
sharing etc) the second PC 'couldn't get on the internet'.

So, I know how to set up connection sharing and what to do to stick a
router on AOL BB (MTU . new screen name for the router etc) but I just
wanted to confirm he *should* be able to use the basic (XP Home)
connection sharing 'as is' with AOL please? (In which case I'll talk
him through it).

All the best ..

ICS ought to work, if all the MTUs are set to 1400 and the second PC
is told that the first is its default gateway.

Ok, noted.

If he keeps the AOL software on both machines would that deal with the
MTU issue Phil?

All the best ..

If the AOL account is a 'Silver' account then only one PC could sign on
to AOL at a time. Although, he should be able to access via another
browser

Just got an Edimax 4-port router from Scan.co.uk and noticed the setting for
MTU was 1400 on that... I guess they think it is easier to set it there, no
need to tell AOL users to make some changes, the way the Scancom routers do.

unlikely, the one with the modem will certainly get it sorted on th
emodem link but the other may not. Also the one with the modem will
have 1400 MTU on its dialup (modem) interface but not on its LAN
(ethernet ) interface. DrTCP.exe is a small utility for setting it on
the dial and other network adapters (one MTU value for each)

pandering to the lowest common denominator ?

or a statement about the degree of clue found in AOL users... or maybe just
a marketing decision, to approach AOL as a future supplier of ADSL equipment ?

Hi Phil,

So, what I got him to do was create a new dialler connection with a
new screenname (al la router).

That was then 'shared' and allowed to start a connection when any PC
on the lan needs it and it all seems to work?

Time will tell ..

All the best ..

Linksys seems to be disappearing from UK shelves under the influence
of AOL's "support" for Netgear products.
