connection reset by peer

hello

i have adsl connection and have some minor networking problems, minor
but annoying. often i have several ssh connections to the systems i
maintain open and as soon as i get distracted for some time i find
the connections broken with "connection reset by peer" error.

even worse thing happens with gnus [and i feel this has something in
common with ssh connection lost]: often it hangs when tries to do
some operations on remote imap server. i tried that server with
MozillaThunderbird and in similar conditions i get "Connection
closed" error [which is just as annoying as having to restart emacs
everytime writing an article took more then 10 min].

could you please tell me where to look for network misconfiguration,
i understand that this behaviour may be caused by million of reasons,
so i just want a couple of hints...

To take a guess it looks like someone is playing with a firewall inbetween
that is doing connection tracking and killing sessions that are idle for a
short period. This can be fixed client side if you turn on the "keep alive"
features in 'ssh' and probably the 'NOOP' (No Operation) features for
IMAP/etc.

10mins though is a bit short.....but plausible if the sysadmin is 'silly'.
