OK. I have tried to network my friend who is using Verizon DSL with a
Westell 6100 modem connected to a Linksys BEFW11S4 router. The direct
connection from the modem to NIC works fine. Can get online etc..When I
hooked up the router, the wireless connection is made as well as the
Ethernet connection. But no access to the internet. The network connection
display (wireless and wired) near the clock shows a connection. When I open
a browser I get nothing but the "cannot find" message. What am I missing? It
is as though the router is blocking all access to the outside. The
connection I see near the clock indicates my LAN connection? Should I be
using a crossover cable between router and modem? Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. I was using a wireless laptop and a wired PC, both running XP with the
latest firmware on the router.

Did you put your Verizon log in info into the router?
I wonder if it's an authentication issue.

No I did not. But I have been reading that the Westell 6100 is a router.
Allowing a USB and Ethernet connection at the same time. Also I read I must
configure the modem to a "bridge" mode instead of "routed-bridge". Then
clone the modem MAC address to the router. Then I suppose the modem is just
a pass-through instead of a router.

OK. try it the old fahoned way. Reset everything to defaults,
Next get your modem online with your isp, direct connect to a pc.

See what the modem's internal ip address is most likely, it's 192.168.1.1 If
this is indeed the case, unplug your cable from the modem and into your
router. Manually set your rotuer to 192.168.1.2 for an IP. Also, set the
default gateway to 192.168.1.1.

Decide witch piece of equipment will be your dhcp server, and turn dhcp off
in the second place piece of equipment.

Finally, check that all the pc's are dhcp.

If that doesn't work, have a beer and think some more about it tomorrow! :-)

Just how do I check if my PC's are DHCP? I know I must know this but cannot
remember! I think I will have a beer and watch baseball and think some more!

Go into network connections off the control panel and right click on the
approperate network connection. Select properties, and double click on the
TCP/IP entry,. 99% of the time the machine will be set to DHCP, but it's
always good to double check.
